Noisy Toys and Your Child's Hearing Health

Hearing Health Tips to Consider from Nicole Duncan, Au.D.

Mention “noisy toys” to Penobscot Community Healthcare Audiologist Nicole Duncan and she’ll give you and earful.

Most battery-operated toys do have a volume output to them and a lot of them are surprisingly loud.  Some toys are going above one hundred decibels when they’re measured on the sound level meter and that is louder than the average chainsaw.

Many children's toys deliver an earl-splitting one hundred twenty-four decibels when held up to your child’s ear. Compare that to OSHA standards.  Any employee who is exposed to eighty-five decibels is required to use hearing protection.
