Health Care for Individuals that are Homeless
Summer Street Health Center
We provide integrated medical, mental health, and dental services to homeless and peri-homeless individuals at
34 Summer Street, Bangor. Summer Street Health Center hosts a number of support groups and participates in a
number of community-oriented projects, inlcuding the Warm Tree where they collect fall and winter attire for homeless
and peri-homeless persons.
Outback Program
The Outback Project Day Program at the Summer Street Clinic is fully operational, providing a safe haven
for homeless and peri-homeless patients. Summer Street Clinic clients can relax, read a book, play pool
or ping pong, exercise or even have a snack or cup of coffee. The Project’s conference room is reserved
for group sessions ranging from tobacco abuse counseling and diabetes education to nutrition.
Oasis Project
The Oasis Project is an initiative of Penobscot Community Health Care to provide respite care for those without a home
or a safe place to recover from an illness or injury. It serves as a safety net for individuals who have clinical and recuperative
needs not covered by other resources. Upon referral from Eastern Maine Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital, or PCHC,
patients are provided with a bed and basic nursing care at an area long-term care facility. A partnership between these
medical centers allows individuals lacking a home or the ability and resources to care for themselves to receive recuperative
care in a comfortable and caring environment at no charge to them.
Hope House Clinic, Shelter & Transitional Housing
Hope House is a 64 bed emergency homeless shelter licensed by MSHA and the Office of Substance Abuse,
the 2nd largest shelter in the state of Maine. Hope House provides an integrated medical model of care
for the homeless at Hope House consisting of access to medical care, psychiatric care, and case
management services. In addition to housing and health care services, 3 meals per day are provided
with assistance from various community groups. Hope House is the community safety net in Bangor,
managing the city of Bangor’s overflow of homeless persons from other shelters. Hope House is running
at 130% capacity serving 80 plus homeless persons a night with our emergency shelter.
Cedar Street Supper Club
Penobscot Community Health Care's many practices volunteer to provide a hot, nutritious meal each month for homeless
at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.
